NAS – Network-Attached Storage. Storage connected directly to the network, through a processor and its own operating system. Lacks the processor power to run centralized, shared applications.

NC – Network Computer. An intelligent display device that accesses and executes applications on a local server.

NC-C – Network Computer-Client. Client side of an NC. Executes tasks that have been acquired from elsewhere on the network.

NC-S – Network Computer-Server. Server side of an NC.

Net-Market Makers – The means the hub chooses to effect transactions, with the primary mediator models being auctions, exchanges (dynamic pricing) and catalogs (static pricing).

NetPC – Network PC. An extension of today’s PC with no floppy or CD-ROM drives. Will support a large hard drive for loading applications from the network. Execution is local.

Netsourcing – e-business infrastructure outsourcing.

Net Surfing – Logging onto the Internet and scanning for information.

Netware - From Novell, software for local area networks, available for DOS, Macintosh, OS/2, VAX, and UNIX. Ethernet, Token Ring, and other configurations can be used with NetWare.

Network – A system of hardware and software connected in a manner to support data transmission.

Network Topology – The arrangement of nodes usually forming a star, ring, tree or bus pattern.

NFS – Network File System. A protocol developed by Sun Microsystems which allows a computer system to access files over a network as if they were on its local disks.

NIC – An adapter card that provides the network physical interface between a desktop computer or server and the network.

NOC – Network Operations Center. A location from which the operation of a network or internet is monitored.

Node – Any device, including servers and workstations, connected to a network; also the point where devices are connected.

Nondedicated Server – A node on which user application are available while network resource maintenance applications execute in the background.

NOS – Network Operating System. Software that allows a PC or a larger server to manage files and handle other networking functions.

NUMA – Nonuniform Memory Access. A form of SMPP, also known as shared memory cluster (SMC). A hybrid between symmetrical multiprocessing and clustering. Arranges multiple processors into small groups of processors, all of which communicate with each other. Designed to extend scalability beyond the traditional SMP system bottlenecks. Memory is logically shared.
