Job Description:

The role of the SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant is to provide hands on Solaris, and SUN technology technical expertise and guidance to existing and potential IAS customers with SUN/Solaris requirements. As a member of an IAS Team focused on SUN products and services, the SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant will provide primary focused hands on SUN technical expertise, and consulting services including, but not limited to, Solaris 10 (Sparc and X86) - including dtrace, ZFS, containers, LDOM’s, other virtualization strategies, application tuning in relation to cool threads technology, domain architecture (E25K), chip architecture, performance tuning, deployment strategies, and roadmap discussions. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant needs to have secondary knowledge and expertise in other SUN focused technologies including Sun Cluster, Java, grid computing, server platforms, storage offerings, replication strategies, utility computing, and management/monitoring strategies. This individual will work closely with the IAS Sales Team and the IAS Engineering/Professional Services Team to engage with customers as required. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant will engage in a tactical role to address one-off customer issues or requirements and will also engage with customers in a strategic/ongoing role to advise and assist with SUN strategic direction. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant should be prepared to assist with integration services as required and will be involved with ongoing training and knowledge transfer to the IAS Sales and Technical teams regarding Sun technologies. Additional services provided by the SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant will include onsite installation and configuration of designed technical SUN focused solutions, onsite technical assessments, performance tuning and analysis, knowledge transfer and training, demonstrations and evaluation support, beta testing support, troubleshooting as required, run book and configuration documentation, and development of service briefs. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant will be required to review and develop Statements of Work, participate in pre-engagement and ongoing project conference calls and meetings, provide status updates, and complete trip reports. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant must be able to research specific SUN technology questions and perform a final qualification of a proposed solution for interoperability and support as required. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant will participate in discussions regarding implementation strategy and approach and must be comfortable with formal technical presentations or “chalk talks” of various SUN technologies. The SUN/Solaris Technical Consultant must work along side the IAS Project Management Team who will set schedules and priorities. Ability to pursue and achieve professional certifications will be required. This position will be focused primarily in the San Diego Area; however, it may be necessary to travel to other IAS office or customer locations on an occasional basis. Some weekend and off hours work will be required.

Requirements Qualifications/Education:

  • At least 5 years of previous experience in a hands on SUN focused technology role
  • At least 2 years of previous consulting experience working at SUN or a Value Added Reseller (VAR) in a similar role
  • Current SUN certifications in Solaris Core (Admin/Network) and associated SUN technologies
  • Strong oral, written, and organization skills are mandatory
  • Ability to develop and deliver formal presentations
  • Ability to demonstrate good judgment and decision making
  • Ability to develop customer run book/configuration documentation. Examples are mandatory
  • Ability to manage time and multiple tasks without supervision
  • Interpersonal skills and professionalism are critical
  • Project management skills
  • Good troubleshooting techniques
  • 4 year college degree is preferred
  • Ability to pursue and achieve additional professional certifications
  • Ability to use Microsoft technologies including Office/Outlook etc.

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Use of Visio
  • Strong professional ties with SUN focused technical resources
  • Strong kernel and I/O tuning expertise
  • Technical understanding of storage and data protection strategies, including SUN and Symantec
        o Sun Cluster
        o Storage Foundation including VCS/VVR
        o Netbackup
  • Linux and/or Windows expertise and certification
  • Virtualization technology experience/certification (i.e. VmWare (VCP), Xen, Solaris 10 Containers/LDOM’s, Brocade Storage/X)
